Proverbs 16:16-20 - The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirit. Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. The Lord has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble. Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished. By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil. It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud. Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.

Proverbs 16:16-20 teaches us the importance of wisdom and humility in our lives. The passage begins by acknowledging that while we may make our own plans, it is ultimately the Lord who directs our steps and establishes our way. We are reminded that though we may see ourselves as pure, it is God who weighs our hearts and knows our true motives. The wise person commits their work to the Lord, trusting that He will guide and establish their plans according to His perfect will. We are warned against pride and arrogance, which are an abomination to God and will surely lead to punishment. Instead, we should pursue steadfast love, faithfulness, and the fear of the Lord, which will turn us away from evil. The passage also emphasizes that it is better to have a humble spirit and live among the poor than to share in the spoils of the proud. True blessing and goodness come from giving thought to God's Word and putting our trust fully in Him. This passage calls us to seek wisdom above all else, recognizing that it comes from God and leads to a life of righteousness and peace.

The words of Proverbs 16:16-20 are a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking wisdom in our lives. So often, we can fall into the trap of relying on our own understanding and making plans without considering God's will for us. We may even deceive ourselves into thinking that our ways are pure and right, when in reality, they are tainted by selfish ambition or pride. But this passage reminds us that it is the Lord who weighs our hearts and knows the true intentions behind our actions. If we want to experience the fullness of God's blessing and purpose for our lives, we must learn to commit our work to Him and trust in His guidance. This means surrendering our own plans and desires, and being willing to follow wherever He leads. It means cultivating a heart of humility and recognizing that apart from Christ, we can do nothing. When we walk in the fear of the Lord and pursue His wisdom above all else, we will find that He directs our paths and establishes our steps. We will experience the peace and security that comes from knowing we are in the center of His will. But the passage also warns us of the dangers of pride and arrogance. When we become puffed up with our own importance and think we have all the answers, we set ourselves up for destruction. God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. If we want to experience His favor and blessing, we must be willing to humble ourselves before Him and others. This means valuing others above ourselves, and being willing to associate with the lowly and the poor. It means recognizing that true greatness in God's kingdom is not about status or wealth, but about serving others and reflecting the heart of Christ. As we give thought to God's Word and put our trust in Him, we will discover the goodness and blessing that comes from walking in His wisdom. We will find that He is faithful to guide us, provide for us, and work all things together for our good and His glory. May we be a people who seek His wisdom above all else, and who walk humbly before Him all the days of our lives.
