Kindness
Reading
Proverbs 16:19-20 - It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud. Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.
Summary
Proverbs 16:19-20 teaches us the value of humility and kindness. The passage begins by stating that it is better to be humble in spirit and identify with the poor, rather than being proud and sharing in the spoils of the arrogant. This speaks to the importance of having a heart posture of lowliness rather than being puffed up with pride. The proverb is not saying that poverty itself is virtuous, but that humility is always better than pride, even if pride comes with earthly riches.
The second verse then says that whoever gives thought to God's word will find what is good, and those who trust in the Lord will be blessed. This tells us that meditating on Scripture and placing our faith in God is the path to discovering true goodness and experiencing divine blessing.
Taken together, these two proverbs point us toward kindness and away from arrogance. They remind us that God values a humble heart that finds its worth in Him, not in wealth or status. And they encourage us to root our lives in God's word and in trusting Him, which is the only way to uncover the truly good things He has for us.
As Christians, we should aspire to this biblical vision of a life marked by humility, kindness, meditation on Scripture, and steadfast faith in the Lord. While the world may esteem pride, prosperity and self-reliance, God's kingdom operates by a different set of values - one that prioritizes a lowly spirit, generosity toward others, devotion to God's word, and moment-by-moment trust in Him. As we align our lives with these kingdom principles, we will find the path of blessing and be a light that points others to the goodness of God.
Reflection
The call to kindness and humility in Proverbs 16:19-20 deeply challenges our natural human inclinations. From our earliest days, we are prone to pride, self-centeredness, and finding our identity in our accomplishments or possessions. We crave status, recognition and influence. Kindness and lowliness of spirit often feel like threats to the image we want to project to the world.
Yet as followers of Jesus, we are called to a radically different way of living. We are to imitate the humble servanthood of our Savior, who did not count equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied Himself and became obedient to death on a cross (Philippians 2:6-8). Jesus embodied the lowly spirit that Proverbs commends, identifying with the poor and marginalized, touching the unclean, and ultimately laying down His life for the undeserving.
When we meditate on the stunning humility and kindness of Christ, it reorients our perspective. We realize that we are not the center of the universe, that our worth is not based on what we have or what we've done, but on the unmerited love and grace of God. This frees us to stop striving for worldly acclaim and instead devote ourselves to simply loving God and loving others.
Of course, walking in humility and kindness is much easier said than done. Our pride runs deep, and our culture constantly reinforces the lie that our value comes from our achievements, appearance or affluence. It takes daily dependence on the Holy Spirit and immersion in God's word to rewire our minds and hearts toward kingdom values.
But as we give thought to Scripture as Proverbs instructs, meditating on it day and night, we will slowly but surely be transformed. We will find that true blessing and goodness are found not in exalting ourselves, but in humbly serving others and faithfully walking with our God. We will discover the joy and freedom that come from being content with what we have, and generous with what we've been given.
So let us commit afresh today to pursuing the lowly spirit and life of kindness that God holds in high esteem. Let us look to Jesus as our perfect example and source of strength. And let us trust that as we pour ourselves out for the sake of others and for the glory of God, He will fill us back up with everything we need to live the abundant life He has called us to.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Your word in Proverbs reminds us that You value humility and kindness over pride and self-seeking. But if we're honest, these qualities do not come naturally to us. We confess our tendency to look out for ourselves, to find our worth in what we have or what we've accomplished, and to treat others as a means to our own ends.
Forgive us, Lord, for the ways we have failed to walk in lowliness of spirit. Forgive us for the times we have been more concerned with our own comfort and status than with the needs of those around us. Forgive us for neglecting Your word and not trusting You as we ought.
We pray that by the power of Your Spirit, You would cultivate in us a truly humble heart - one that is content to decrease so that You might increase. Help us to find our identity and security in Your unshakeable love for us, rather than in the fleeting approval of others.
Give us a passion for Your word, that we might give thought to it continually and discover the good life that comes from knowing and obeying You. Increase our faith, that we would trust You in every circumstance and experience the blessing of a life surrendered to Your will.
Make us people of extraordinary kindness and compassion, who are rich in good deeds and generous in every way. May our words and actions point others to the lavish grace that we have received in Christ.
Thank You that because of Jesus' perfect life of humble servanthood and sacrificial death on our behalf, we can walk in newness of life. By His resurrection power, enable us to die to pride and live for Your glory alone.
In the name of our lowly King Jesus we pray, amen.
