Hope

Reading

Romans 5:1-5 - Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Summary

In this passage from Romans, Paul reminds us that through faith in Jesus Christ, we have peace with God and access to His grace. We can stand confidently in this grace, rejoicing in the hope of sharing in God's glory. Paul goes on to make the profound statement that we can even rejoice in our sufferings. As counterintuitive as this may seem, Paul explains the logic behind this perspective. He writes that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces proven character, and proven character reinforces hope. This hope is reliable because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. So suffering, rather than diminishing our hope, actually serves to strengthen and refine it when we respond rightly.

Reflection

What an incredible promise - that we can rejoice in sufferings! This certainly goes against the grain of our natural human tendencies. When trials come, our impulse is often to complain, lose heart or fall into despair. But Paul presents us with a beautiful alternative. He explains how suffering can actually cultivate hope within us, as we lean into God's love and care through the process. With each trial endured, our trust and reliance on God is stretched and deepened. Proven character is forged. Stronger hope blossoms. The key is keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus through it all. As long as we remember His great love for us, demonstrated powerfully through His sacrifice on the cross, we can be assured that everything we face has purpose under His sovereign and loving rule. He will bring us through, using even the most difficult circumstances to produce His good fruit within us.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we praise You for the incredible gift of hope that You have given us through Your death and resurrection. When trials come, help us to keep our eyes fixed on You, trusting that You are with us and are working all things for our good, even when we can't understand how. Pour Your love into our hearts through Your Spirit. Give us the grace to rejoice in sufferings, knowing that You will use them to cultivate perseverance, proven character and unshakable hope within us. We love You and praise You, Jesus. Amen.
