Hope

Reading

Romans 8:13-17 - And not only that, but we also have as our hope the seal of what is to come. God is the one who seals us and gives us the Spirit in our hearts as a down payment. Therefore, I speak to you in this way. And I am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died.

Summary

In this passage from Romans, Paul addresses the issue of food sacrificed to idols and how Christians should view such food. He emphasizes that no food is unclean in itself, but it can become unclean if someone's conscience is troubled by it. The main principle is to walk in love and not let your freedom in Christ become a stumbling block to a weaker brother. Paul reminds us that the kingdom of God is not about external regulations but righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Our focus should be on pursuing peace and building others up, not exercising our rights. The passage ends with an encouragement to live according to your faith but be careful not to cause others to stumble.

Reflection

This passage challenges me to think more carefully about how my actions affect others, especially fellow believers who may have a more sensitive conscience. It's easy for me to just do what I think is right without considering how it impacts those around me. I'm reminded that walking in love means limiting my freedom at times out of consideration for a hurting brother or sister. My actions should be guided by discernment, not just my own personal rights or liberties. I want to grow in living at peace with others, avoiding needless quarrels over disputable matters. Most of all, I'm inspired to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, pursuing his righteousness each day through the power of the Spirit.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank you for this reminder to walk in love and pursue peace with my brothers and sisters. Forgive me for the times I've been insensitive to those with a weaker conscience or flaunted my freedom without discernment. Grow humility and discernment in me through your Spirit. Help me to live each day fixated on you and your righteousness. Give me eyes to see others as you see them and to build them up instead of tearing them down. Empower me to walk in step with your Spirit and reflect your love to everyone I encounter today. Amen.
