Communion

Reading

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 - For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Summary

In this passage from 1 Corinthians, Paul is addressing issues related to communion, or the Lord's Supper, in the Corinthian church. He reminds them of what Jesus did on the night he was betrayed - Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said 'This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way, Jesus took the cup after supper and said 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.' Paul explains that when we eat the bread and drink the cup in communion, we proclaim and remember the Lord's death until he comes again.

Reflection

The Lord's Supper is a sacred time for believers to reflect on Christ's sacrifice and all that he endured for us. As we partake of the bread and cup, we proclaim his death, joining with believers everywhere in remembering what he did to establish the new covenant. Communion gives us an opportunity to examine our hearts and lives to see if there is any unconfessed sin or things dishonoring to God. It is a time to surrender ourselves fully to Jesus again. As we eat the bread, representing his body broken for us, and drink the cup, representing his blood poured out for the forgiveness of sins, we recommit ourselves to living for him in gratitude for his amazing grace. What a privilege it is to be united with Christ and with each other through this simple yet profoundly meaningful sacrament.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we praise you for your sacrifice on the cross and for the gift of communion that allows us to proclaim your death until you return. Search our hearts and lives and lead us to repent of anything that displeases you. Fill us afresh with your Holy Spirit as we partake of the bread and cup, remembering all you endured for us. Unite our hearts with yours and with fellow believers everywhere as we celebrate you through this sacred meal. We long for the day we will take communion with you in your Father's kingdom. Come quickly, Lord Jesus! Amen.
