Friendship
Reading
Proverbs 18:24 - A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Summary
Proverbs 18:24 teaches us an important lesson about friendship. The first part of the verse warns that having many companions or acquaintances is not necessarily a good thing. In fact, it can lead to ruin if we are not discerning about the company we keep. Shallow, fair-weather friends who are only there during the good times can be a negative influence and lead us astray.
However, the second part of the verse highlights the blessing of a true, loyal friend - one who sticks closer than a brother. This implies that sometimes our friends can be even more faithful and supportive than our own family members. These special friends are rare treasures to be valued. They are the ones who remain by our side through thick and thin, in times of adversity and hardship.
The Bible affirms the importance of godly friendships in many places. Proverbs 17:17 says "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." Proverbs 27:6 tells us, "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses." And Proverbs 13:20 wisely advises, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm."
As believers, the greatest friend we could ever have is Jesus Christ. He is the ultimate example of a faithful friend who sticks closer than a brother. Jesus laid down His life for us, His friends, to reconcile us to God. He promised to never leave us nor forsake us. And His friendship is available to all who put their trust in Him.
In a world of shallow, self-serving relationships, we should strive to be loyal, Christ-like friends to others. We must be discerning in our choice of close companions, surrounding ourselves with wise, faithful friends who draw us closer to the Lord. And above all, we can rejoice that we have a perfect, unchanging Friend in Jesus, who will never let us down. In Him we find the ultimate security, love and belonging that our hearts crave.
Reflection
This proverb about friendship is a poignant reminder for our relationship-driven world today. Social media has expanded our networks and increased our number of 'friends' exponentially. Yet at the same time, studies show that loneliness and social isolation are on the rise. It seems we are more connected than ever before, yet less deeply known.
The first part of Proverbs 18:24 cautions us that a large quantity of companions does not equate to quality friendships. It's easy to get caught up in the quest for popularity or social status by accumulating surface-level acquaintances. But there is great wisdom in keeping a smaller circle of close, trusted friends. These are the people who truly know us, support us, and aren't afraid to lovingly speak truth into our lives.
We see a powerful example of this kind of friendship in the Bible with David and Jonathan. 1 Samuel 18:1 says, "After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself." Jonathan was a loyal friend to David in good times and bad. He supported David, protected him, and encouraged his faith in God - even when it meant going against his own father, King Saul. Jonathan was a rare friend who stuck closer than a brother.
In contrast, the Bible also gives examples of the danger of fair-weather friends. In the parable of the prodigal son, the younger son squanders his wealth on wild living and when the money was gone, so were his companions. He found out the hard way that many 'friends' are only there for the good times.
As Christians, we are called to be devoted, sacrificial friends who love at all times, not just when it's easy or beneficial to us. We should seek to cultivate friendships that sharpen us spiritually and spur us on in our walk with Christ. Most importantly, we must keep Jesus as our ultimate, unchanging Friend and source of security and belonging.
In a transient world of shallow connections, may we invest in deep, authentic friendships. Let's ask God for discernment in choosing our close companions. And in our friendships, may we strive to reflect the loyal, sacrificial love of Christ.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of friendship. I praise You for the godly friends You have placed in my life who encourage my faith and point me to Jesus. Help me not to take them for granted but to express my gratitude and affirm them often.
Forgive me for the times I have placed popularity above authentic connection or been a shallow friend to others. Give me discernment to invest in relationships that honor You. Show me how to be a loyal, Christ-like friend who loves at all times - in joy and sorrow, success and adversity.
Thank You most of all for the friend I have in Jesus. I am humbled and amazed that the King of Kings desires a close relationship with me. Help me to draw near to Him daily and find my identity, security and belonging in Him alone. May His love overflow into all of my relationships.
Use me to be a conduit of Christ's love to the lonely and hurting. Provide opportunities to reach out and befriend those who need to know Your love. May my friendships bring glory to You.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.
