Self-control

Reading

Proverbs 25:16-17 - 16Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. 17A righteous man who gives way before the wicked is like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain.

Summary

Proverbs 25:16-17 speaks to the importance of self-control in the life of a believer. Verse 16 compares good news from a far country to cold water for a thirsty soul. Just as cold water refreshes and revives someone who is parched, so too does good news invigorate the spirit. This could be news from a loved one, or more importantly, the good news of the gospel. However, we must be discerning with how we receive and share such news. Verse 17 warns that a righteous person who gives in to the wicked is like a polluted spring or fountain. They may start out pure, but by compromising with evil, they become tainted and unfit for service. This highlights our need for self-control and discipline. We must be on guard against temptations and negative influences that could lead us astray. By exercising restraint over our words, actions, and even our thoughts, we protect the purity of our witness. Self-control allows us to be consistent springs of living water, pointing others to the goodness of God. Without it, we risk becoming contaminated and leading others away from the truth. Therefore, as believers, we must rely on the Holy Spirit to help us cultivate self-control in every area of life. By walking closely with Him and obeying His leading, we can avoid the pitfalls of sin and compromise. Then we will be like that cold water - refreshing and trustworthy representatives of Christ to a world in need of His love and grace.

Reflection

The message of Proverbs 25:16-17 is just as relevant for us today as it was when it was first written. In a world filled with temptations and distractions, self-control is a vital virtue for every Christian to cultivate. It's all too easy to let our guard down and allow ungodly influences to seep into our lives. Whether it's the media we consume, the company we keep, or the thoughts we entertain, we must be vigilant about protecting our hearts and minds. The image of a polluted spring is a sobering reminder of how quickly we can become tainted by compromise. One small concession to sin can lead to a slippery slope of unrighteousness. That's why Paul exhorts us in 1 Corinthians 10:12, "Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall." None of us are immune to temptation, no matter how long we've walked with the Lord. We must daily put on the armor of God and rely on His strength to resist the enemy's schemes. At the same time, the promise of being a refreshing spring is a beautiful incentive for living a disciplined life. When we exercise self-control, we become conduits of God's goodness to others. Our words and actions can point people to the source of living water Himself. What an incredible privilege and responsibility! It's not always easy to say no to our flesh, but the rewards are worth it. As we abide in Christ and allow His Spirit to control us, we will bear much fruit for His kingdom. We can be those trustworthy messengers of good news in a world so desperately in need of hope. So let us commit afresh to the pursuit of self-control, knowing that God's grace is sufficient for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and run with endurance the race set before us. As we do, we will become more and more like those life-giving springs, pouring out His love and truth to all who thirst.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of Your Word, which instructs and guides us in the way we should go. Thank You for the reminder from Proverbs about the importance of self-control in the life of a believer. I confess that it's not always easy to exercise restraint, especially in a world that encourages self-indulgence. Forgive me for the times I have allowed sin and compromise to pollute my witness. Cleanse me from all unrighteousness and renew a right spirit within me. Lord, I desire to be a pure and refreshing spring that points others to You. Help me to be disciplined in my thoughts, words, and actions. Give me the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to make godly choices. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit, that I may walk in obedience to Your will. May my life be a testament to Your goodness and grace. Use me as a messenger of Your good news, to bring hope and healing to those who are thirsty for truth. Keep me ever mindful of the privilege and responsibility of representing You. Thank You for Your promise to complete the good work You have begun in me. I trust in Your faithfulness to help me grow in self-control and every other virtue. May my life bring glory and honor to Your name. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
