Faith

Reading

Hebrews 11:1-3 - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

Summary

This passage from Hebrews 11 defines faith and gives examples of people in biblical times who lived by faith. It explains that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Through faith, we can understand that the world was created by God's powerful word alone, though we cannot see the creation event ourselves. The elders in times past, such as Abel, Enoch, and Noah, are examples of people who lived by faith and were commended by God for doing so.

Reflection

This passage challenges us to consider the role of faith in our own lives. Like the people mentioned in Hebrews 11, we walk by faith and not by sight. We have not seen God create the heavens and the earth, yet we believe by faith that he did so through his powerful word. We have hope in promises and realities that we do not see with our physical eyes. How do we demonstrate faith in our daily lives? Do we trust that God is who he says he is and will do what he has promised even when circumstances seem difficult? Or do we live as practical atheists, only believing what can be proven empirically? We are called to live by faith, trusting in the God who is invisible yet real. Though the road is hard, we can find encouragement from the faithful examples of Abel, Enoch, Noah and others who came before us.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the example of faith shown by your people in times past. Help me to daily choose faith over doubt, trust over fear. When I cannot see the path ahead or understand your plans, give me strength to keep placing my hope and trust in you. Show me practical ways to demonstrate my faith through obedience, that others may see my good works and glorify you. Help me stand firm in my faith no matter what trials may come, looking to you as the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.
