Self-control

Reading

1 Corinthians 9:25-27 - Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Summary

The topic of self-control is about exercising restraint over one's desires and actions. The Bible reading from 1 Corinthians 9 describes how Paul exercises self-control like an athlete in training, so that after preaching to others he himself will not be disqualified. Self-control requires discipline to master our impulses and live according to God's will, not our fleeting desires.

Reflection

This passage from 1 Corinthians and the topic of self-control remind me how difficult yet vital it is to exercise restraint over my thoughts, words, and actions. It's so easy to indulge my appetites and do whatever feels good in the moment. But this leads to sin and spiritual destruction. God calls me to train myself through constant prayer, Scripture reading, and accountability, so that I can resist temptation and walk in the freedom of obeying Christ. Developing self-control is challenging lifelong work, but it's worth it to become more like Jesus each day.

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I often lack self-control and indulge my selfish desires. I waste time on meaningless things and fail to do what you've called me to do. Forgive me for my lack of discipline. Fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I can train myself to live for you alone. Help me exercise restraint by immersing myself in your Word and communicating with you regularly through prayer. Transform my mind and strengthen my self-control so that I can serve you wholeheartedly. Amen.
