Hebrews 11:1-3 - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

In Hebrews 11:1-3, the author provides a definition of faith and gives examples of faith from the Old Testament. He describes faith as the assurance or evidence of what is not yet seen, and says that it was by faith that the elders were commended and that we understand the world was created by God's word. He points to the examples of Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and others who lived by faith, not having received the promises but trusting in God's faithfulness. Though imperfect, they looked forward to the heavenly country God had prepared for them.

This passage on faith is so encouraging to me. It reminds me that faith is not just wishful thinking or positive feelings - it is confidence and assurance in the trustworthiness of God and His promises. Even when we don't see the fulfillment of God's promises in our lifetimes, we can trust that He is faithful and will accomplish His purposes in His timing. I'm thankful for the examples of the heroes of faith listed here. Their lives encourage me to live by faith daily, even when it feels difficult or I can't see what God is doing. I'm reminded that this world is not my home, but I can look forward to the heavenly country that God has prepared for all who trust in Him.

Father God, increase my faith. Help me to trust You more, even when life feels confusing or Your promises seem distant. Thank You for the encouragement and examples of the saints who have gone before me. Give me the courage and perseverance to live by faith daily. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus and the heavenly home You have prepared for me. Amen.
