Proverbs 3:13-18 - Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed.

In this passage from Proverbs, Solomon speaks of the immense value and benefits of wisdom. He declares happy and blessed those who find wisdom and gain understanding (v. 13). The rewards of wisdom far surpass any earthly riches like silver or gold (v. 14). Wisdom is supremely precious and nothing on earth compares to her worth (v. 15). In wisdom's right hand are length of days, and in her left are riches and honor (v. 16). Her ways are pleasant and peaceful (v. 17). She is a tree of life for those who take hold of her, bringing happiness to those who retain her (v. 18). Solomon makes an emphatic case that true wisdom, which begins with the fear of the Lord (Prov. 1:7), is more valuable than any material possessions or earthly rewards. Those who prioritize wisdom and understanding will be divinely blessed with long, fulfilling, and prosperous lives. Wisdom should be the highest pursuit of every believer.

As Christians, we must take Solomon's words to heart and truly recognize the surpassing worth of godly wisdom. In a world that values wealth, status, pleasure, and possessions above all else, we need wisdom from on high to keep from being deceived. Wisdom helps us view life from an eternal perspective and build our lives on what will last. I confess there are times when I have envied those who seem to "have it all" in worldly terms. But Solomon warns against putting stock in earthly riches, which are fleeting. The rewards of wisdom - righteousness, peace, honor, long life, and the blessings of God - are far greater and more lasting than any earthly achievements. As James 3:17 says, the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits. This is the wisdom we must earnestly seek. As believers, we have access to this wisdom by abiding in Christ. As we seek Him in His Word and in prayer, He will guide us into truth and discernment by the power of the Holy Spirit. May we diligently pursue wisdom day by day, storing up for ourselves treasures in heaven rather than on earth.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the amazing gift of wisdom that You offer us through Your Word and Spirit. Give me an insatiable appetite for the wisdom that comes from above. Help me to value it far above any earthly treasures or achievements. As I walk with Christ each day, fill me with discernment and understanding to make wise choices that honor You. Guard my heart from envy or covetousness. Instead, may I be content with the blessings of wisdom and righteousness that only You can provide. Teach me to number my days rightly by storing up eternal rewards rather than temporary, worldly ones. May wisdom mark my life and bring You glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
